Abstract: Surface subgroups have facinated mathematicians for decades for their far-reaching implications in low-dimensional topology and geometric group theory. One of the most important breakthrough is the Surface Subgroup Theorem proved by Kahn and Markovic in 2009. In this talk, we will first present the machinery they developed to construct immersed surfaces in negatively curved manifolds, and then introduce our recent work (joint with Jeremy Kahn) on the existence of surface subgroups in the fundamental group of closed hyperbolic 4-manifolds.
