Abstract:

For many years, invariant theory has focused on the ring of G-invariant regular functions to understand geometric quotients in the setting of algebraic varieties. Although Rosenlicht, Kac, Vinberg, and others touched upon the field of G-invariant rational functions, it seems that the beautiful and crucial role of Galois theory in this picture has gone unnoticed. In this talk, we will showcase recent work that sheds light on the Galois-theoretic aspects of invariant theory and their implications for the study of period integrals of Calabi-Yau varieties. We will then outline some next steps for recasting invariant theory in the Galois paradigm. This is joint work with Bong Lian.
