Abstract:

The coadjoint orbit philosophy of Kirillov and Kostant posits a deep relationship between representation theory of a Lie group and coadjoint orbits in the dual of its Lie algebra. From this viewpoint, irreducible unitary representations are expected to arise as quantizations of coadjoint orbits, which carry natural symplectic structures. This perspective may be regarded as a representation-theoretic analogue of the passage from classical to quantum mechanics. In this talk, I will review the basic ideas of the coadjoint orbit method and discuss recent developments in the setting of reductive groups.
