SIMIS String Math Seminars: Cohomological rank functions and algebraic surfaces of general type

Speaker: Jiabin Du (SIMIS)

Abstract: The one of main goals in algebraic geometry is classifying algebraic varieties up to birational equivalence. For the category of smooth projective complex algebraic varieties, we need to find the relations between birational and numerical invariants as much as possible, which is the so-called geography problem.

In this talk, we will first recall basic and well-known geographical inequalities especially for algebraic surfaces of general type. Then talk about a powerful tool in investigating the geometry of irregular varieties: the cohomological rank function introduced by Giuseppe Pareschi and Zhi Jiang. And then introduce a fine classification result for surfaces of general type with small invariants, which is a joint work with Zhi Jiang and Guoyun Zhang.
