Lecture 1: Defect Operators.
Many QFTs admit top-down constructions with respect to an extra-dimensional geometry in string theory. Properties of QFTs engineered in this fashion are encoded in the associated geometry. Motivated by examples we introduce the notion of Defect Group derived from the extra dimensions and discuss its utility.
