Physical Math Seminar @SIMIS: M-theory, Geometric Engineering, and SymTFTs.

Speaker: Marwan Najjar (Peking University)

Abstract : We present a systematic study of Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs) within the geometric engineering program of M-theory. Beginning with a review of geometric engineering foundations, we develop the framework for constructing SymTFT actions. We then detail the construction of topological operators for p-form (discrete and continuous abelian) symmetries and their charged defects, identifying the precise M-theory objects that encode these structures—including (-1)-form symmetries.

Our focus centres on the SymTFT for 4D N=1 theories engineered from M-theory on G2-holonomy spaces. Through this lens, we derive key properties of the 4D effective theory, such as:

  • Modified instanton sums,
  • Emergent 4-group symmetry structures.
