The rise of generative AI aggregators that provide AI-generated summaries of original content, such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT, poses a serious threat to the business model of quality content production. This paper explains how generative AI aggregators affect content producers’ incentives for quality investment from two novel perspectives: (i) a positive market-expansion effect, by which AI aggregators eliminate information asymmetry between content producers and readers and thereby mitigate moral hazard; and (ii) a negative business-stealing effect, by which comprehensive AI-generated summaries substitute for original content and erode click-through traffic to publishers. The model illustrates both effects and serves as a benchmark for evaluating regulatory policies and further extensions.
